About
Climate change, extreme weather events, and declining biodiversity are placing increasing pressure on agricultural landscapes. Agroforestry systems and field woody vegetation offer proven potential to address these challenges – yet practical implementation is often hampered by a lack of decision-support tools: Which sites offer the greatest economic and ecological benefit? Which species are best suited to local conditions? And how can timber and biomass be efficiently integrated into regional value chains?
DiP-SMART Agroforest, a collaborative project bringing together 12 partners from research and industry – including DLG as a practitioner partner – is developing targeted digital solutions to close these gaps. Combining AI-assisted remote sensing, digital woody plant cadastres, and decision support systems, the project identifies suitable areas, models cultivation strategies, and plans full utilization pathways through to regional biorefineries.
