How will agricultural robots get to the field in the future?
Agricultural robots enable automated field operations and reduce labor requirements, thereby lowering overall costs and improving the cost–benefit ratio compared to conventional tractors and agricultural machinery. However, transporting robots involves additional effort, which in turn reduces overall efficiency. To avoid long transport distances, field depots are often established in practice, where machines and materials are provided close to the fields. As a result, transport distances are often reduced to less than 10 km. When operating at high field capacity, robots must be relocated several times a day between non-adjacent fields, increasing logistical effort. Farmers therefore require a simple and flexible transport solution that integrates into existing workflows and can ideally be used with different vehicles, tractors, or machines. Especially during labor-intensive periods, such as slurry spreading, self-propelled machines could transport robots with minimal additional effort. This paper analyzes and discusses various options for transporting agricultural robots in order to provide farmers with a sound basis for decision-making for the holistic planning of their production processes when deploying agricultural robots.
